At Synergi Orthodontic Specialists, we prioritize your overall well-being in every aspect of care, including the technology we use to provide the most accurate and safe treatments for you or your child. One important tool we use is the 3D Cone Beam CT (CBCT) ICAT FLX. We understand that hearing the word “radiation” can cause concern, so we want to compassionately explain how this technology works, its safety, and why it’s such a valuable part of your orthodontic journey.

How Much Radiation is Involved?

The effective dose of radiation from a 3D CBCT ICAT FLX scan is quite low, especially when compared to other common sources of radiation we encounter in daily life. For orthodontic purposes, the dose typically ranges from 20 to 100 microsieverts (µSv), depending on the field of view we use. To give you a holistic understanding, let’s put that in context:

  • One CBCT scan (20-100 µSv): This is a specialized, precise image that helps us plan your treatment in a way that is customized for you. We use this scan only when absolutely necessary for the most accurate diagnostics.
  • Natural background radiation (8-10 µSv per day): We are all exposed to natural radiation every single day from the earth, the sun, and even certain foods. In fact, the amount of radiation you receive from one CBCT scan is similar to what you would be exposed to just by living your everyday life for a few days.
  • A round-trip flight from New York to Los Angeles (40 µSv): Even something as routine as air travel exposes us to radiation at higher altitudes. The amount received during a flight is similar to some CBCT scans.
  • A chest X-ray (100 µSv): For comparison, a standard medical chest X-ray delivers a similar or sometimes higher dose than a 3D CBCT scan.

Why Do We Use the CBCT Scan?

When we recommend a CBCT scan, it’s because it gives us crucial information about the structures that traditional 2D X-rays can’t reveal. This helps us make the most informed decisions about your orthodontic care, from diagnosing airway concerns to evaluating the positions of teeth and bone in a way that supports your long-term health.

The ICAT FLX system we use is designed with advanced technology to limit exposure, focusing on the specific areas we need to examine while avoiding unnecessary radiation to other parts of the body. Our goal is to ensure that you receive the safest and most effective care.

Your Health is Our Priority

We approach every decision, including the use of advanced imaging technology, with a holistic mindset. We know that true health goes beyond just straightening teeth—it’s about understanding and supporting your body as a whole. Our commitment is to always use the lowest dose of radiation necessary to achieve the best outcome for your treatment, and we’ll continue to communicate openly and compassionately with you at every step.

If you ever have concerns or questions about radiation or any part of your treatment, we’re here to listen and provide clear answers. At Synergi, your safety and well-being are always our top priorities.
